Woking’s Epworth Choir performed its annual Family Christmas Carol Concert at Christ Church, Woking on Monday 10th December 2018.  They were joined by the choir of Greenfield School, Woking.

The concert was held in aid of SSAFA, the armed forces charity. SSAFA works to ensure that the needs of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families are met in an appropriate and timely way. The charity’s mission is to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst the Armed Forces, veterans and their families in order to support their independence and dignity.

This much-loved annual carol concert conducted by the choir’s Music Director, Michael Waldron, included uplifting carols and Christmas music to celebrate the festive season.

Mozart’s Requiem

This Remembrance-themed concert marked the centenary of the Armistice, and formed part of a series of events marking Epworth Choir’s 60th anniversary year. The 200+ combined voices of Epworth Choir and Islington Choral Society were joined by the world-class Philharmonia Orchestra and a truly stellar line-up of vocal soloists. Internationally-acclaimed violinist Chloë Hanslip completed the line-up.

The first half of the programme featured Barber’s breathtaking Adagio for Strings, a solo performance by Chloë Hanslip, and the world premiere of a specially-commissioned orchestration of David Bednall’s powerful Nunc Dimittis. The second half of the programme culminated with the combined vocal and instrumental forces in a truly uplifting performance of Mozart’s Requiem.

Performed within the inspiring surroundings of the newly-refurbished Guildford Cathedral, the concert is supported SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity. As Britain’s oldest military charity, their work is dedicated to helping servicemen and women, veterans and their families who are in need.

Epworth Choir held a concert to celebrate its 60th Anniversary, joined once more by Epworth Brass and the soloist Samuel Pantcheff.  

The programme included: 5 Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams; Gloria by Chilcott and the World Premiere of Air and Angels by Ian Assersohn.  The last piece was commissioned by the choir to mark its 60th anniversary.

For this concert, the choir raised funds for Surrey Young Carers, which is part of Action for Carers Surrey.  Young carers are children or young people under the age of 18, who provide regular care and emotional support to a family member who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances. Surrey Young Carers support young carers in many ways including providing advice, guidance and information and someone to talk to.

Epworth Choir opened its doors to join for a day’s workshop on Mozart’s Requiem conducted by Michael Waldron and accompanied by Laurence Williams. In addition to singing, we had sessions working on good singing and vocal technique in an applied setting. The day culminated with an informal performance of the work in the warm and pleasant surroundings of Trinity Methodist Church.
